Matt Halkes (Consultant Anaesthetist)

‘For me the KOP mission to Mombasa provided a rare and much appreciated opportunity to concentrate purely on clinical problems and teaching, free from the usual distractions of admin and management. The caseload provided the challenge of performing familiar techniques in an unfamiliar setting, but was made entirely manageable by the support of the other KOP team members and the local practitioners. An important lesson was realising how much could be achieved for patients despite being in a relatively resource poor environment. It certainly highlighted how privileged we are in the UK! What struck me most was the great enthusiasm for any education and training we were able to offer. This is an area I am keen to develop further on future trips, as it is the key to making KOP missions ultimately redundant!’
